Independence Day

The streets were lockdown-empty on Independence Day. Public celebration of Nigerian nationhood was decidedly muted: no flag flying parades through town; invitation only events in government house.

A few weeks later, many thousands of young Nigerians came out on to the streets to protest an epidemic of police brutality and to celebrate a different vision of national unity. The streets were full of flags.

In this powerful Micro Dose, you’ll hear the sounds of celebration and struggle. These are sounds louder than bullets. #EndSARS means #JusticeNOW. #LongRoadTogether.

As one of Chicoco’s lead journalists and drama producers, local stories are important to me. They take me on journeys, often accompanied by my 5-year-old co-presenter, Biomele.
