From accusations of witchcraft to denial of inheritance, many widows in Nigeria are subjected to cruel practices that violate their dignity and fundamental rights. In some communities, women are forced into ‘trial by ordeal’ to prove that they did not kill their husbands.

Despite the unspeakable cruelty of what they were put through, Patience and Princess were brave enough to share their stories with us. In telling them, they hope that women across the region will find solace and solidarity in these shared stories and to start a public conversation to drive legal and cultural reforms.
